Fucking Plagiarism

...You know, there are things I'd much rather talk about, but when shit crops up, it REALLY crops up. One thing I do, perhaps oddly, is Google my stories. I started doing that a few years ago when I was writing Guilty Gear fanfiction, and someone mistakenly assigned someone else's name to a fic I wrote called 'Darkest Body, Brightest Soul'. Fortunately a friend of mine pointed it out. But ever since then, every five months or so, I google my stories. Just to make sure everything's okay. And guess what I found this morning?

http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2504013/1/The_Legend_Of_Allyn_Arceneaux

I wrote that in December of 2007.

If you can believe it, this is the FORTH time someone has taken a story I've written and posted somewhere else without my permission. And you know what? I'm fucking sick of it. The first couple of times, it's actually flattering, it tells you you're doing something right if someone's willing to steal your story, but now I see it for what it is, a bloody great slap in the face. I don't spend hours in front of my laptop typing and swill gallons of coffee keeping myself awake just so someone can take credit for my work, I don't. It's not flattering anymore. It's just a giant, fucking slap in the face.

Anyway, I reported this guy to FictionPress.net, I expect them to remove it, but if they don't, I'm not sure what else I can do. Except to say this. If any fellow online authors are reading this; GUARD YOUR GODDAMN STORIES. Make sure you state that it's your property and no one else's.

Geh. You know what? I have so much more to say but I'm so pissed off right now, I'll let System of a Down do it for me.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know I feel for you, it isn't fun. I think Arceneaux is one of your best stories and for someone to say they wrote it is complete horse shit.

I'm not sure how anyone who reads the bio and then your story can say it was same person. Its on completely different levels.

Anyway, I'm sure everything will work in your favor, and I guess the only thing you can do is to keep an eye out for these bastards.

BTW - On a lighter note, I think you're a great author. I've been enjoying your stories for a few years now and have been stalking your page for months.

This is moronic, hurtful behaviour - I hope fictionpress resolves the matter quickly. I agree with Vicki, Arceneaux is one of my favourites from your growing collection. Your song choice is apt indeed.

Thanks for the support you guys, I'm really appreciative of it. This whole thing has me so annoyed I can hardly express how I feel, so it's a comfort to know that I've got people on my side who see through this shit.

I feel sorry for you and have all my support; all your fans are with you.

It really sucks that someone would do that. No matter how untalented I am, I've never felt compelled to steal another person's work to make myself look good. They must have a serious inferiority complex. Good luck in getting it resolved.

Thanks, you two. I can really use the support on this. Thankfully the staff at FictionPress seem to have taken the story down, but this guy is still touting my story on his myspace page, and if anything he said is to be believed, he tried to get it published. You have no IDEA how much that infuriates me (if it's true).

To clarify: if he had merely reposted your story with proper acknowledgements intact you'd have no problem with it?

Normally I wouldn't bother clarifying something like this, but well, it's the Internet! after all…

Interesting blog by the way.

I know a coupld of authors who embed a copy of the copyright notice at one or two random places in the story - I presume so they can point to them when reporting it to the posted sitehost
